The Saints boys tennis team had one final week of competition to prepare for the conference tournament (Saturday) and section play (Monday). They did this by taking on some of the toughest competition in the state on Saturday in Rochester Loudres and Mound Westonka.
Their latest game, however, was Tuesday against our neighbors to the south, the Fairmont Cardinals. The boys looked sharp Tuesday afternoon, beating the visiting Cardinals 6-1.
Each of St. James’ 1-4 singles players won in straight sets with the closest match being a 7-5, 6-4 win by Joel Carlson at #4 singles. Fairmont had no answer for the Saints’ top three. They won a combined five games against Charles Kolstad, James Rogers, and Matt Jurgens.
Doubles play was a little more closely contested. Fairmont got the best of Seth Jacoby and Nic Nelson who had a rare loss at #1 doubles (6-4, 6-7, 5-7), but Scott Mueller and Matt Tucholke won a tight match at #2 doubles (6-4, 7-6), and Arturo Garcia and Brandon Pearson won handily (6-0, 6-0).

Well, it was tough going for the boys Saturday against two top-10 rated teams in the state. Rochester Lourdes, rated 3rd in the latest Coaches poll, and Mound-Westonka, rated 7th, handed St. James just their third and fouth losses of the season. Zellmann’s bunch did beat Redwood Valley to go 1-2 in the St. James Invite.
Seniors Charles Kolstad and James Rogers each went 2-1 on the day at #1 and #2 singles, respectively. No Saints singles player or doubles team could stop the tough team from Rochester who also mowed through Redwood 7-0 and Mound Westonka 5-2.
The Saints had several close matches against Mound Westonka that went the way of the visitors. Matt Jurgens lost in three sets at #3 singles 3-6, 7-5, 6-10. Shane Olson and Brandon Pearson came up just short in the first set at #3 doubles falling 6-7(4-7) and couldn’t recover. Nic Nelson and Seth Jacoby put a good fight at #1 doubles but lost 4-6, 3-6. If any two of those matches go the other way, the Saints have a 4-3 win instead of a 5-2 loss.
