Each year we honor the memory of those Veterans that have given their lives in service to our country and show respect for those that are still walking our streets, living in a nursing home or are just confined to their own homes. These are some of the bravest people that I know, they packed a bag and left their families to serve our country without asking why, did it because it was their duty and did it with honor. I know while they were serving this country they did think about their families and how they were getting along without them. This has caused many a hardship on many families around the country, not only here in Watonwan County. There have been programs that have been started to help the families over the years while their loved one is gone and for the most part they have helped.
I think that as this Memorial Day is upon us it is time to consider getting involved in a program that has been in Minnesota for some time. It is the Beyond the Yellow Ribbon ...your Fort Minnesota program. The first Yellow Ribbon City was proclaimed in December of 2008 by Governor Pawlenty. There has been such a group, organized here in Watonwan County with community members from all over Watonwan County and they have been meeting over the last serveral months. This group will work with the families and community to bring them all together to assist the families of the all military members, past, present and future generations.
I think that it is time that we look at all of the options available to all of our members of the military active and inactive, enlisted and National Guard members. If you remember, last week there was another 1700 Minnesota National Guard Members that have been called to active duty again, Who knows when the next group will be called up and where will they be from. It could be very likely that they could be from our area, that is why this is such an important thing to get started here in Watonwan County. If you would like more information on the Beyond the Yellow Ribbon you can stop at the National Guard Armory on Armstrong Blvd here in St.?James or go to their web site at www.BeyondTheYellowRibbon.org or call 1.651.282.4284 or contact Deb Grote at the Veterans Service Office on First Ave here in St.?James.
Remember to Fly your Flag this weekend and every day you can.
