The Saints took on a tougher opponent last Thursday night when Fairmont-MCW came calling. St. James was ready for the challenge, and the Saints earned a solid 54 to 20 victory over the Red Bulls.
The Saints got 36 of their team points from six pins.
Before the match started the St. James community took a few minutes to acknowledge Coach Gene Hildebrandt’s 450th win against New Ulm and his career accomplishments.
The Saints’ Cody Hanson opened the match facing Trevor Schultz, who is the top ranked wrestler in Minnesota in the 106 lbs. class. Hanson never quit, but Schultz came away with a 17 to 6 major decision and put the Red Bulls on top 4-0.
It was the only lead of the night the visitors would enjoy. The Saints Ruben Bermudez scored a major decision in the 113 lbs. class by a 12-1 margin and the team score was tied.
Richy Soto picked up a forfeit at 120.
Coach Hildebrandt shuffled some weight classes around to match up better against some of the Red Bull wrestlers and try to maximize the team score.
Listed at 132, Isaac Carreon moved down to 126 and scored a major 9-1 decision. Taylor Berg moved up to 132 and pinned his opponent at 2:36 of the second period. This pushed the team score to 19-4.
The visitors closed the gap to 19-10 with a pin at 138.
Giovanni Alvarado moved down to 145 and rolled up a 23-8 score that earned him and the team a technical fall. Alvarado put on a take down show racking up 10 take downs during his match.
The Saints broke the match open at this point by getting four pins in the next five matches. Zach Gleiter began this run by picking one up at 152, Esteban Zelaya got one at 170, Julio Nino added one at 182, and Devin Wolle completed the run at 195.
The teams traded pins in the last two matches, with Victor Torres ending the match by pinning his opponent at 1:31of the first period.
The wrestlers travel to Blue Earth to take on undefeated, conference foe BEA on Friday.

The Saints B squad beat Fairmont/MCW 18 to 15. Josh Stordalen and Chris Johnson got pins for the Saints.
