Senior Giovanni Alvarado joined an elite group of St. James wrestlers on Saturday when he picked up his 100 career win for the Saints.
Like the wrestling team, Giovanni picked up three wins in three matches, with the third win being his 100th career victory. All of Giovanni’s wins were pins.
The weekend started off with another tough
conference match up against Blue Earth Area. It was a team that was undefeated in the South Central Conference before they met the Saints.
The visiting Saints doubled up on BEA winning 42-21. As has happened many times this year, the Saints jumped out to an early lead thanks to the lower weight classes. This time the Saints were up 24-0 before BEA put a team point on the board.
Cody Hanson started out with a pin at 47 seconds of the opening period.
Ruben Bermudez and Richy Soto followed with decisions, Isaac Carreon followed with a pin in the third period at 126 lbs., and Taylor Berg finished off the opening run with a pin in just 33 seconds of the first period.
Alvarado got the first of his pins at 145 lbs in 1:01 of the first period to push the Saints lead up to 30-4.
BEA cut the lead down to 30-12 with a pair of major decisions. A decision by Zach Gleiter and a forfeit awarded to Julio Nino opened the lead back up to 39-12.
BEA won the next two matches before Victor Torres won a hard fought match 6-4 at 285 to finish the scoring at Saints 42, BEA 21.
Saints win twice in a triangular meet v. Canby and Waconia
The Saints took a long road trip to Canby on Saturday to compete in a triangular meet against the Waconia Wildcats and the Canby Lancers.
Saints v. Waconia
The Saints started out with Waconia and it was a tight match through the lower weights. The Wildcats led 6 to 5 through the first three matches. Cody Hanson picked up five team points with a 17-2 win in the opening match.
Isaac Carreon put the Saints in the lead for good with an impressive 17-1 win worth another five team points.
Wrestling at 132 lbs. Sammy Guzman got a pin in 37 seconds of the first round.
Alvarado started a run of three Saints pins when he got a pin at 1:39 of the first period.
Zack Gleiter got a pin at 32 seconds on the first period, and Ryan Westman got a pin at 160 lbs. at 2:29 of the second period.
Waconia then ran off a string of three pins. Victor Torres got a pin for the Saints at 285 lbs. making the final team score St. James 46, Waconia 30.
Saints v. Canby
The Saints completed the triangular by beating Canby 48 to 14. It was the lower weights who gave the Saints a comfortable lead early in the match. A pin by Richy Soto at 120 lbs. helped the Saints build a 17-0 lead before the Lancers were able to put some team points on the scoreboard.
Alvarado’s pin at 145 was his 100th career win, and it helped the Saints open the team lead up to 23-10.
The Saints won six of the last seven matches. At 182 lbs., Esteban Zelaya got a pin at 4:32 of the third period. Adrian Torres got a pin in the 220 lbs. class at 1:48 of the first period.
Victor Torres won a 5-2 match against David Bursack, who is the 9th ranked wrestler in the state at 285 lbs.
Coach Gene Hildebrandt said when it comes to state ratings Victor is going to have to start getting some respect because that’s the second time this year he’s beaten Bursack. Victor is not currently ranked.
Saints to host St. Peter
In what should be another good match, the Saints host St. Peter on Thursday night
St. Peter has one conference loss, so a win by those Saints would put them in a three way conference tie with the good guy Saints. I suspect Coach Hildebrandt will have his team ready so that does not happen.
