Shirley Jean (Hovdet) Haler, age 78, of St. James, died Tuesday, April 10, 2012, at Mayo Clinic Health Services, St. James. Visitation will be Sunday, April 15, from 4 to 6 p.m. at Sturm Funeral Home in St. James and one hour before services at the church on Monday. Mass of Christian Burial will be held Monday, April 16, at St. James Catholic Church in St. James with Fr. Thien Nguyen as celebrant. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, St. James. Shirley was born Sept. 21, 1933, in Mt. Lake, the daughter of Arnold and Emelia (Kjobstad) Hovdet. Shirley grew up in the Butterfield/Odin area. She graduated from the Springfield High School. She moved to California where she lived for a couple of years. On Nov. 27, 1954, Shirley married LaVerne Haler in St. James. The couple made their home in Grogan before moving to their farm near St. James where Shirley continued to live until her death. Shirley was a member of St. James Catholic Church, enjoyed playing bingo in area communities and visiting Jackpot Junction. She was a homemaker and enjoyed spending time with family and friends.
Shirley is survived by her sons,Brian and Maritess Haler of Lewisville, Blair and Kathy Haler of St. James and Gary Haler of St. James; grandchildren, Jeremy Haler, Micah Haler, Kira Winter, Stefanie Rath, Trisha Haler and Lyndsey Haler; great-grandchildren, Aiden and Austin Rath; brother, James and Iona Hovdet of Butterfield; sisters-in-law, Elsie Haler of Grogan and Diane Hovdet of Truman; an aunt, Hilda Anderson of Springfield; and several nieces and nephews.
