The St. James VFW boys baseball team hit the road on Saturday and took a pair of games from Mapleton.
The St. James team won the opening game 6-2 and took the back end of the double header by an 8-2 score. The sweep pushed the team’s record to an impressive 9-1.
John Olsen was the winning pitcher in the opener. Olsen went five innings and gave up no runs and just one hit.
It was a tight game in the early innings. St. James scored a run in the third and held a 1-0 until the top of the sixth, when the VFW boys broke the game open when they put up five runs.
In that inning Devon Schmitz doubled in two runs and Bransen Petersen added another two RBIs with a single.
Tyler Witcraft went the last two innings giving up a run in each of the innings.
Olsen went two for three at the plate, Witcraft was two for four and Walker Froehling was two for four and scored twice.
St. James won the second game by an 8-2 score. VFW scored first when they put up four runs in the top half of the fourth. Mapleton chopped the lead in half in the bottom of the fourth, when they scored two runs on VFW starting pitcher Ryan Menssen. He gave up those two runs over the six innings he pitched.
St. James added three in the fifth and another in the sixth for the 8-2 final score.
Menssen went six innings, striking out five and giving up five hits in getting the win.
Justin Stevens pitched the seventh inning, striking out two.
Walker Froehling had another big game when he went two for three, scoring two runs and knocking in two more.
Zach Brandts also got two RBIs on two for three hitting and Schmitz doubled in two more runs. Bransen Petersen also knocked in two runs with a single.
Kaleb Mohwinkel doubled for St. James and Menssen, Stevens, Olsen and Simon Beck all singled for VFW in the second game.
The VFW next home game is a double header against Fairmont on Sunday, June 24th. The first game gets underway at 1 pm.
