Last Tuesday, at the July 17 St. James City Council meeting, Mayor Gary Sturm handed Bob and Anne Sorensen the distinguished Outstanding Senior Citizen of Watonwan County.
The only people that appeared surprised by this were Bob and Anne.
“I was amazed,” said Anne. “The things we do are volunteer things and we just do them because we like to help people out and help causes and that kind of thing.”
Some of those “things” include many volunteer hours on many projects such as The Opera House restoration project, obtaining grants, regularly attending various meetings, helping to work the fundraisers on Hot Dog Days and Railroad Days in St. James, 4th of July food stands, flea markets, auctions, Tour of Homes, Opera House Gala, VFW Steak Fry, American Legion Chicken Fry, Pepsi stand, pancake feed and Potato Bake...and the list goes on and on.
According to an e-mail written by Lorraine Behlmer, another recipient of the Outstanding Senior Citizen Award, the Sorensons are estimated at over 2500 hours and 1,450 miles of volunteerism.
“We like to be involved,” said Bob who, at one point, was also a County Commissioner and, now, currently acts as Construction Manager and as a Board member of the St. James Historical Society. “I just can’t sit around and sit at the pool hall or the cafe every morning and things that happened yesterday. We’ve got to stay busy.”
