A’s 5, New Ulm 2
With some fresh arms ready to take the mound, the A’s entered the Region 2C tournament ready to surprise some teams. They did just that in the opener at New Ulm, upsetting the #2 seed Brewers 5-2.
Fresh off a successful Legion baseball summer, Sam Carlson got the call for the A’s and came up big pitching seven strong innings. New Ulm could only come up with two runs and five hits against Carlson.
He walked four, struck out three and hit a batter to earn the win. Draftee Jason Nachreiner (Springfield) picked up the save, holding the Brewers in check over the last two innings. The A’s jumped out to a quick start, scoring three in the top of the first inning. Anthony Stordalen and Brandon Menssen picked up singles and Austin Pinke and Ryan Menssen smashed doubles in the inning to get the scoring started. The A’s added two more in the third with singles from Chris Menssen and Brandon Menssen and capped by a sacrifice fly from Ryan Menssen.
Brandon Menssen was three for four and Ryan Menssen was two for three for the game.
Lamberton 4, A’s 1
After opening the Region tournament on the road against the #2 seed, the A’s didn’t see their task get any easier as they returned home to face the #1 see Lamberton Long Sox on Sunday. The A’s sent draftee Andrew Woitas (Sleepy Eye) to the mound and he responded with a strong performance giving up only two earned runs in seven innings of work.
The Long Sox jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first scoring two unearned runs. The other two runs came in the fifth on a two run home run from Johny Pistulka.
Woitas kept the Long Sox bats quiet the rest of the way.
The A’s offense was shut down for most of the game. Through eight innings they could only come up with three hits. However, it looked like they might rally in the bottom of the ninth. Nate Ewert started the inning with a walk.
After a ground out, Joe Krause and Austin Pinke singled, Ewert scored and the A’s brought the tying run to the plate. But the rally ended there and the A’s dropped the contest 4-1.
Woitas was charged with the loss. Joe Hager and Matt Dahl each pitched an inning of scoreless relief.
Joe Krause and Austin Pinke were each two for four.
Searles 8, A’s 1
Not much of anything went right for the A’s in Searles Tuesday night. After back to back strong pitching performances and solid defense, the A’s saw weaknesses in both areas in game three of the tournament. The A’s offense also struggled, scoring only one run on six hits.
Page 2 of 2 - The lone bright spot for the A’s was Brandon Menssen who went three for four at the plate. Anthony Stordalen picked up the only RBI when his third inning groundout scored Joe Hager who had singled earlier in the inning.
Two wins this weekend means the A’s go to the State Tourney
The Region 2C tournament concludes this weekend. The six team, round-robin event sends the top four records to the Class C state tournament in St. Cloud beginning August 17.
The A’s play at Leavenworth on Friday at 8:00 pm and return home on Saturday to host Stark at 7:30 pm. Wins in both games will send the A’s to their first state tournament appearance since 1999.
