  • Barbara Jean Madson, 66 joined our Lord on Wednesday, August 22, 2012 after a short battle with cancer.  She passed peacefully at the Davis Hospice Center in Cheyenne, Wyo. A memorial service honoring Barb’s life will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 29, 2012 at Faith Lutheran Church in Lander Wyoming. Her ashes will be interned at Southern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Boulder City, Nev.
Barbara (Barb) Jean Madson was born in Montevideo, Minn. on July 11, 1946 to David and Virginia Warner. Barb grew up in St. James. She was the oldest of nine children (six brothers and two sisters). She graduated from St. James High School in 1964 and later attended Marymount College in Salina, Kans. where she majored in French and minored in English. After graduating, she taught French in Austin before marrying her high school sweetheart Robert (Bob) Madson on June 14, 1969.
Barb and Bob moved to California shortly after getting married where they had their first son Craig. Eventually they moved back to Minnesota for several years before moving to North Dakota and later Montana. After a short time in Montana, they came back to Minnesota where they had three more children, Jeremy, Tara and Kevin. In 1984, Barb and Bob moved their family to Wyoming where they lived for the next 24 years (first in Worland and later in Lander) before retiring and starting their travels.
After the birth of Craig, Barb became a stay-at-home mom for many years in order to devote her time to raising her four children. She spent most of her days watching her kids in all different types of sporting events, taking them to kids programs at the library, and bike riding with them around town. She eventually went back to work when she and Bob bought the Putt and Rack and the Ben Franklin in Worland, Wyo. Later, she returned to teaching in Lander, Wyo. where she worked as a paraprofessional in the special needs resource center at the Lander Middle School. She loved her work and all of the children and people she worked with.
Barb was a kind, gentle woman who valued her family above all else. Barb loved the outdoors and spent much of her life enjoying all kinds of outdoor activities with her family. She especially enjoyed summers spent in the Big Horn Mountains camping and fishing with her husband and kids.
After retiring in 2008, Barb and Bob began spending their winters volunteering at the Boulder Beach Campground near Boulder City, Nev. During the summer, they worked as camp hosts for the Forest Service at the Sinks Canyon Campground outside Lander. Outside of the volunteer work, they spent most of their remaining free time traveling to see their four children and several grandchildren.
Barb is survived by her husband Bob; her son Craig, daughter-in-law Heidi Madson and their son Alex; her son Jeremy Madson, his three children Leonard, Simon and Helen and their mother Kate Madson; her daughter Tara Southwell, son-in-law Justin Southwell and their two children Madison and Olivia; her son Kevin Madson; and Timalee Haberman (whom she considered to be a daughter). She is also survived by her mother Virginia Warner and five brothers and two sisters as well as many nieces and nephews. Barb’s latest grandchild (her 6th) was born to Justin and Tara Southwell on September 4, 2012. Her name is Olivia Barbara Southwell. The origin of the name Olivia is Latin and translated as “at peace”.
