Saints 7-0 over Fairmont and Saints 7-0 over Luverne
It’s onto the girl’s state tennis tournament championship for the SJA Saints girls tennis team after the Saints first blanked Fairmont 7-0 and then blanked Luverne by the same score in the Section 3A Final.
In the semis against Fairmont all of the singles and doubles matches were won in straight sets.
Aryn Eckstrom shut out her opponent winning 6-0, 6-0. Lorena Hernandez won 6-1, 7-6; Julia Boeve won 7-5, 6-1; and Aubrey Eckstorm won 6-4, 6-3.
First team doubles of Michaela Nordby and Acacia Foss won 6-4, 6-3; second doubles of dMegan Lahti and Michalea Nelson won 6-0, 6-3; and three doubles of Mrogan Rankin and Hanah Christensen won 6-2 7-5.
Luverne put up a bit of a stiffer fight inthe finals. Aryn Eckstorm won 6-2, 6-2; Hernandez won 6-2, 6-0; Boeve won 6-0, 6-3; and Aubrey Eckstrom won 7-6, 6-2.
In doubles play Nordby and Foss won 6-2, 6-2 and Lahti and Nelson won 6-1, 6-1. The three doubles team was Rankin and Cassidy Chapek and they won in three sets 6-1, 5-7, 6-1.
Head Coach Les Zellmann said, “We played a very good level of tennis. Our coaching staff was pleased with play at every position.
“Lorena Hernandez continues to raise her singles game with more of a complete strategic approach. Our doubles teams controlled the tempo of their matches with good serving and net play.
“We give the entire team a lot of credit to their improvements that they have made in the past several weeks. It has been great fun to see their willingness to work on some little changes that are making some big differences.
“We look forward to representing Section 3A in the state tournament. We know that there will be very good play, but we will look forward to the challenge.”
The Girls State Tennis Tournament begins on Oct. 23. The Saints first round opponet in the eight team field is Rochester Lourdes. SJA beat Lourdes earlier in the year 6-1, with the only loss happening to Aryn Eckstrom. She had a tough three set loss in that match, so it is going to be a rematch she will be anticipating. If the Saints win over Lourdes it would be onto the final four!
SJA beats MCW 7-0
It might seem like the girls tennis regular season ends too early. It’s over in September, but then you get a unpleasant, cold, blustery afternoon like last Thursday, Oct 4, and then you realize yep, time to start wrapping this season up.
Page 2 of 2 - With wind chills in the upper 30s, the road to the team state tennis tournament championship opened at home against Martin County West.
While the conditions were unpleasant, the outcome was great for the Saints as SJA drubbed the Mavericks 7-0.
It was the last time a strong senior class played on the friendly confines of the St. James High tennis courts.
Five of the ten players on the home courts Thursday were seniors, and they all went out winners.
As she has all year, Aryn Eckstrom led the team as the number one singles player. Michaela Nordby was one half of one doubles, Megan Lahti and Michaela Nelson were two doubles and Morgan Rankin was on the three doubles team.
In the four singles matches all of the Saints won in straight sets, and they won a total of 48 games to two for MCW.
Eckstrom won 6-1, 6-0. Lorena Hernandez won 6-1, 6-0. Underclassmen Julia Boeve at three and Aubrey Eckstrom at four each ‘pitched’ shutouts winning 6-0, 6-0.
Head Coach Les Zellmann said MCW tried to stack their doubles teams with some of the Mavericks better players to be more competitive against the powerful Saints.
It made for more competitive matches, but the Saints prevailed in all three doubles matches.
Nordby and Acacia Foss won at one doubles 6-1, 6-2. It was a little tighter for Lahti and Nelson as they won 7-5, 6-1. Rankin and Hannah Christensen took three sets to win. They lost the first set 4-6 and then came back to win the last two 6-4, 10-4.
