  • While the harvest is just about over in Watonwan County, there’s still a bit of picking to do across Minnesota according to a  recent weekly report from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA).
However, this year’s early harvest is smashing the five year average.  For example, on Oct. 14, the corn harvest was 90 percent complete. The five year average for corn harvested on that date was 27 percent.
The chart connected to this story shows both the corn and soybean harvests.

While many farmers   in Watonwan County are reporting corn harvests greater than 200 bushels an acre, the USDA said last week that Minnesota's cornfields would average 168 bushels an acre this year. That’s a 12 bushel gain from its estimate one month earlier.
That would make Minnesota the nation's number two corn producing state this year, moving it ahead of both Illinois and Nebraska, which typically occupy the second and third places.
Despite the droughtwe’ve experienced, these estimates would make the corn crop the largest in state history. Drought ravaged Iowa is still the top corn producer.
The national average according to the USDA is that corn yields would be 122 bushels an acre.
The USDA estimates farmers across the nation will harvest 10.71 billion bushels of corn this year. That would be the smallest corn harvest since 2006. Corn futures spike five percent the day of the revised forecast.
The USDA forecast the state soybeans yields at 43 bushels an acre, with the estimated national average being 37.8. As reported in the Plaindealer, many County farmers were seeing yields higher than that.
