  • While going about your everyday activities, it’s likely you don’t think much about how manufacturing effects you. The reality is manufacturing is everywhere, and Watonwan County is host to some major manufacturing players. That’s why St. James Mayor Gary Sturm made the week of Oct. 21-27 manufacturers week.
“Manufacturing has the second highest payroll in Minnesota,” said Sturm.
That represents 18 percent of all employment in the Southwest region of Minnesota.
A lunch was held at the American Legion Oct. 25 to celebrate all businesses, manufacturers and entrepreneurs in St. James.
Economic and Community Development Director Molly Westman thanked the many manufacturers located in Watonwan County and urged the community to go out and show their appreciation for all the manufacturing industry does for the community.
“Go out and thank our local businesses and manufacturers – which are so vital to our economy here in Watonwan County,” said Westman.
Director of Small Businesses Mike Nolan was also at the manufacturing lunch Oct. 25. He spoke about the entrepreneurial spirit that is so key to success in manufacturing.
“Manufacturing believes in the next big thing before they even know what it is,” said Nolan.
His speech pivoted on the ideas of living a full life based on accomplishing three main goals: having people in your life who you love and who love you back, feeling that what you do in life has meaning and being an optimist even when your luck has run dry.
“If you have great fulness in life, you can’t help but share it,” said Nolan.
St. James manufacturing is successful because of those manufacturers who think outside of the box and expand ideas in order to fulfill their entrepreneurial spirit. So, this week we thank those businesses around St. James that make this such a great place to work and live.
