  • Southern Minnesota Initiative Foundation (SMIF) recently approved a grant worth $19,459 for the St. James Economic Development Authority.
The grant will be used to provide equipment, marketing and training to start a commercial kitchen incubator, which will provide the needed resources for food driven entrepreneurs to launch their businesses.
Much in the same way an egg can be incubated in order to ensure its safe development, this kitchen incubator will be used to ensure safe development of small businesses in the St. James region.
The kitchen will be available to those small businesses that create goods, but can’t yet afford their own commercial kitchen.
The funds received from the grant are going toward updating the current kitchen in the  Armstrong Elementary School building.
EDA director Molly Westman says the funds will arrive on Nov. 15 and they are hoping to have the project done by Jan. 1.
Since 1986, SMIF has provided over $24 million in grants to create economic vitality throughout south central and southeastern Minnesota.
