  • That first real blast of winter we had over the weekend was pushed back by the enthusiasm and warmth exhibited and felt by the large crowd attending the 2012 Saints football awards banquet, which was held Sunday night at the Presbyterian Church.
Head Coach Jeff Whitney opened the event by giving special thanks to the parents of the players whose support was essential in fielding a football team.
Thanks and recognition was then given to the players, Saints boosters, coaches, and all of the people and organizations who supported Saints football this fall.
In addition to a recap of the varsity program,  the results of the 7th, 8th, and C squad seasons were covered.
Individual and team stats were included in the handout at the banquet.
Ryan Menssen was the leading rusher for the Saints. He picked up 465 yards on 109 attempts, averaging 4.5 yards per carry. Ryan had more than half of the Saints total rushing yards of 818.
Coach Whitney also noted that as  the fullback, Menssen was the team’s leading receiver.  He had 262 yards receiving during the season. Zack Gleiter was second with 229 receiving yards and Mason Collier had  209 yards.
Senior Sam Carlson, a four year varsity letter winner, was the leading passer for the Saints. He had 804 yards through the air.
Walker Froehling contributed another 301 yards to the passing game as the team’s second quarterback.
Menssen was the team’s leader in tackles. He had 117 tackles. He also led the team in sacks with four. Devin Wolle was second in tackles   with 89. Will Runge was second in sacks with three.
Gleiter was third in tackles with 71 and he  led the team in interceptions with four. Kody Curry had three interceptions.
Ryan Menssen was the only Saint to make South Central Conference first team All Conference in the balloting conducted by the SCC’s football coaches.
Devin Wolle was an Honorable Mention All Conference winner.
For the awards chosen by the team, Menssen was named the team’s Most Valuable Player on  Offense and he won the  Leadership/Iron Man Award.
The Saints lineman of the year went to Wolle. The scout team player of the year went to Mitch Rettke. Coach Whitney noted that Rettke was so good on the scout team that he played his way onto starting for the varsity a couple of games into the season.

The ‘Sundrop Award’ went to special team players Menssen and Froehling with Walker Froehling winning the special team player of the year award.
Two captains were selected for next year. They are Ryan Menssen and Kody Curry. The Head Coach noted that other players, through their efforts over the course of the off season, could earn their way to being team captains.
As finding ways to financially support the football program is important, Curry was recognized as the top fundraiser among the team players during the fall’s fundraising drive.
