  • The first sanctioned day of practice for girls basketball and gymnastics was Monday.
First things being first, gymnastics got going by setting up the gymnastics equipment at the National Guard Armory on Armstrong Boulevard.
The girls on the team  pitched in to have all of the vaults, bars and beams ready to go on Tuesday when they begin to practice. Their season opener at home is on Dec. 6, vs. Windom.
Head Coach Rachel Aamot thinks the team will be a little deeper this year as she expects about ten more girls out for the sport.
It was also the first day of practice for the girls basketball team on Monday. This is Adam Schroeder’s first year as the head coach of the girls basketball team.
On the first day of practice there were approximately 32 girls out for the sport.
Schroeder said this first iteration of the SJA Saints will be very young. There are a few seniors out, but there are no juniors and there are a lot of sophomores and freshmen.
The first couple of days of practice involved working on fundamentals.
The Saints open the season vs. Jackson County Central at home on Tuesday, Nov. 27. Girls basketball will be  the first of the winter sports to get underway.
