Watonwan County Library St. James branch celebrated the 10 year anniversary in a new building Saturday Nov. 3 with events like P.J’s Magic Show and a visit from Vicki Myron, author of “Dewey: The Small-town Library Cat who Touched the World.”
The community joined in the celebration. Members both young and old enjoyed the event, entertainment and meeting the people who made the construction of the new library possible. It also provided a moment to thank the library staff for all they do throughout the year.
The tenth anniversary open house was sponsored by the Friends of the St. James Library – the same group that was so pivotal in the resurrection of the building.
“The Friends of the Library worked so very hard to raise money for the construction of this building and continue to support the library,” said Cheryl Bjoin, Director of the Watonwan County Library St. James branch.
In conjunction with a $1 million grant from the state of Minnesota and $500 thousand raised at the County and City level, The Friends of the St. James Library raised $300 thousand for the new building ten years ago.
Friends of the St. James Library is a group organized 20 years ago with the specific goal of improving the library. Ten years later the library was built.
As a result of the reconstruction of the library, there is room for activities and supplies. Space that was much needed in the cramped library of 10 years ago.
“There are places for people to sit and study and just use the library,” said Bjoin. “Enough space to display what you’ve got.”
The library now has sections for children, teens, adults and individuals who just want a quiet place to study and a full section of Spanish books. There is also a group meeting room, where various library activities and other groups meet – and a technology lounge.
St. James is fortunate to have a library with over 51,800 books and 5,000 movies and audio books. Any books that can’t be found in the Watonwan County Library St. James branch can likely be found and ordered from the Watonwan County Library system.
