Irene attended De Guille Beauty School in St. Paul in 1938 and worked as a beautician in St. Paul and eventually St. James in early 1940s. She also worked in Des Moines, Iowa and San Francisco, Calif. She married Vernon Meyers on October 6, 1945 in St. James. They moved to Rochester, where she worked as a beautician in the Kahler Hotel until 1947. They then moved to Odin where she worked as a beautician in her home (Irene's Beauty Salon) until she retired in the early 1990s. She lived at her home in Odin until October 2009, when she moved to an apartment in St. James. In June 2012 she was transferred to the Good Samaritan Nursing Home in St. James, where she was cared for until her death this week. She was very active in the Zion Lutheran Church, being involved in bible studies, ladies aid, the county transportation program, Christian women, Rebekah Circle and many others. She also helped make quilts and continued doing this while she was in the nursing home. She was also active in Royal Neighbors for many years. Irene loved to travel. Her travels included Norway twice, both the east and west coasts, Arizona, Texas, Florida, and visiting family and relatives. She enjoyed visiting her kids and grandkids. Her grandfather Elling Olson was one of the founding fathers of Odin. Her father and uncles ran Olson Bros. General Store after Elling passed away. Irene was always one of the biggest promoters of the Odin community and its activities.
Irene is survived by her children, Patricia Rettke of Boyceville, Wisc., Jerome (Ruth) Meyers of DeForest, Wisc., James (Barb) Meyers of Maple Grove, Stan (Gloria) Meyers of Sioux Falls, S.D., Kyle (Liz) Meyers of Mankato, Darryl (Lynne) Olson of Ormsby; 9 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren; niece, Nancy Braaten of Butterfield; and nephew, Gary Olson of Waseca.
