  • Alvin James Bratland, age 87, of St. James, passed away Thursday, Nov. 15, 2012 at the Trimont Health Care Center in Trimont. In keeping with his wishes, his body was cremated and he and his wife Dolores will have a committal service in Emmetsburg, Iowa, Spring 2013. An announcement will be made at that time.  You may send family condolences online at www.sturmfh.com. Arrangements are with the Sturm Funeral Home in St. James.
    Alvin James Bratland was born July 12, 1925 in St. James, the son of Osper and Hilda (Pearson) Bratland. Alvin grew up in St. James and graduated from St. James High School. He was drafted into the army shortly at the age of 17 and was in combat in WWII where he served in Germany, France and England and drove a tank for George S. Patton's Third Army.
    Following his military service, he traveled the country working as a singing waiter. He returned to Minnesota and received his Bachelor's of Science degree in Chemistry at Mankato State College. On November 29, 1950, he
    was united in marriage to Dolores Jean Taylor of Emmetsburg, Iowa. The couple was blessed with two children; Charles and Rebecca.
    Alvin worked for several companies as a metallurgist and Quality Control Engineer for several companies including National Can Company, Borden's Foods, Sherwin Williams and Kaiser Aluminum Corporation.  He was instrumental in the design of the aluminum can for the American Can Company. His career allowed him to move his family around the country relocating to many states including; California, Washington, Wisconson and New York.
    Alvin enjoyed traveling, singing, reading, history, boating and geography. He was a member of the American Legion and V.F.W.  He enjoyed people and always wanted to strike up a conversation with anyone and tell a joke or two just like his father did. Alvin lived the remaining years of his life at the Trimont Health Care Center where he received excellent care.
    Alvin is survived by his son Charles Taylor Bratland & his daughter Rebecca Ann Mamuyac, two grand daughters Amanda Sue Bratland and Ashley Jean Bratland, one daughter in law Robin Bratland, and one son in law Anthony Mamuyac.
