  •      The Saints finished a strong third place when they hosted their annual St. James Area Classic on Saturday Dec. 8.
LCWM won the tournament with 187 team points. Minneota was second with 184 points and the Saints had 176 team points.
The fourth place team was NRHEG and they trailed the leaders with 102 points. LeSueur-Henderson and DeLasalle were the other teams rounding out the six team field.
Saints Head Coach Gene Hildebrandt said he felt very good about the way the team wrestled. “If one or two matches went the other way we would have had a chance to win it,” he said.
The Saints had four champions. After starting the season at 120, Cody Hanson dropped down to 113 and won that weight class. He decisively won his first two matches and then won the championship by a 4-3 score over a Minneota wrestler.
Richy Soto was crowned the champion at 126. Like Hanson, Soto’s path to the championship was similar. He had two comfortable wins and then a tight 6-4 victory over a LCWM wrestler.
The Saints next two champs were in the upper weights. Devon Wolle won the championship by a fall at 1:49 of the first period. Wolle opened with a pin, but his match that got him to the champion round was a tough 6-2 over a LCWM wrestler.          Victor Torres won the heavyweight match with a 5-3 win over a LCWM wrestler.
The Saints had two second place finishers. Kody Curry took second at 145 and Adrian Torres took second at 220. “Adrian had a nice tourney,” Hildebrandt said.
The Saints had four third place finishers. Mario Garcia at 106, Angel Zamarripa at 120,  Isaac Carreon at 138 and Ryan Westman won third place with a fall in 1:39 of the first period.  “Westman finished strong,” the head coach said.
“Mario had some nice wins against a couple of tough wrestlers,” Hildebrandt said.
Connor Engel at 152, Zack Gleiter at 160 and Colin Hoppe at 182 finished fourth. Sammy Guzman finished fifth with a technical fall over his opponent.
Saints win big over Fulda 58-10
The Saints traveled to Fulda last Thursday and came away with a decisive dual meet victory.
The Saints had five falls in the meet. Mario Garcia got it going at 106 with a pin at 2:54 of the second period.
Cody Hanson and Richy Soto had pins in the first period. In the upper weight classes Colin Hoppe and Victor Torres had third period pins.
Page 2 of 2 -     Sammy Guzman, Zack Gleiter and Devin Wolle collected forfeits.
Isaac Carreon won 11-2, Kody Curry won 4-1 and Connor Engel won 6-0.
A couple of the Saints had tough losses. Ryan Westman and Adrian Torres both lost to wrestlers they lost to last year, but they wrestled better against them this time around. “Adrian had a tough loss, in the last few seconds,” his Head Coach said.
The Saints next wrestle at the Redwood River Riot on Friday, Dec. 14, and Saturday Dec. 15.
The site is the Redwood Area Schools and there will be 28 teams competing in the tournament. It is the largest wrestling tournament in southern Minnesota.
