  • We need a hard winter

  • That's right. We need a long, cold, miserable winter with record snowfall amounts. Then we need a long, cold spring with a gradual thaw so the snow slowly seeps into the ground.

  • That's right. We need a long, cold, miserable winter with record snowfall amounts. Then we need a long, cold spring with a gradual thaw so the snow slowly seeps into the ground.
Now, this is not what I want. I want a winter that averages ten degrees warmer than last year with less snow.
But the drought is going to be a threat to the farm economy of the area if some serious precipitation doesn't happen over the next three or four months. This time of year, precipitation is usually going to come in the form of snow.
In the first 11 months of the year, 10 of them had below normal precipitation. This dry spell extends back through the last half of 2011.
The U.S. Drought Monitor says we are experiencing an extreme drought in Watonwan County.
Right now to break this drought we need foot after foot of snow coming down on our heads. We need night after night to be as one comic once quipped, "It ain't a fit night out for man or beast!"
That's what we need - an all time high in cabin fever misery. That's not what I want, and we may not even get that as the drought is expected to continue over the next several months, but we need a real hard winter.
