  • Senior Richy Soto won the 126 lbs. class in the Redwood River Riot this past weekend in Redwood Falls.
This is the third year the largest wrestling tourney in southern Minnesota has been held.
Wrestlers from 28 schools competed this year. Head Coach Gene Hildebrandt said Soto is the first champion the Saints have had in this tourney.
Richy had a fairly easy time of it, winning four matches. Three were by comfortable margins, though he bested Sam Baier of River Valley 7-6 in the semifinal.
Soto beat a Maple River wrestler in the championship round 9-3. Soto is now 12-0 for the year and picked up his 75th career win during the tourney.
Cody Hanson finished third at 113 lbs. In the winners’ bracket Hanson won with two falls and a major decision before taking a tough 4-3 loss in the semis.
Cody came back with two wins in the wrestle back bracket to claim third place. Hanson is now 11-3 for the year.
Devon Wolle moved down to the 182 lbs. weight class for this tourney. Wolle had been wrestling at 195 lbs in the early matches this year. He finished fifth and suffered his first two losses of the year. Hildebrandt speculated that Wolle  might have stepped down into a tougher bracket.
Other Saints that placed in the 28 team field were Isaac Carreon and Victor Torres in eighth place.
Zack Gleiter finished in seventh. Hildebrandt thought Gleiter had a great tournament. According to the coach, Gleiter had been battling the flu for the past couple of weeks and this tournament indicated that he was working his way back into shape.
The head coach said some of the Saints got some bad draws in the wrestle backs. He said several wrestlers might have had a few more wins if they would have been placed on the other side of a bracket.
The Saints scored 119.50 team points. Wabasso, Red Rock Central won the tournament with 190 points and United South Central came in second with 153 points.
The Saints wrestle both teams this year. USC is up next as the Saints travel to Wells Friday night.
