  • When the state conference was held in November at Crowne Plaza Suites, Bloomington, several special awards were given to ARC Southwest.
    One of them was the Commissioners Award of Excellence for the housing access program in which ARC Southwest’s current chairman, Colleen Campbell, was please to announce the successful move from living at home for her son and daughter to living in their own apartments, with home support services. Claudia Johnson, Mankato, is the housing advocate in this area.
    Another award went to Wilbur Neuschwander-Frink of the Mankato office receiving the Martin Luther King Jr. Pathfinder Award and the Harry Meyering Volunteer Award for her work with the ‘United We Stand’ players, who put on a great play in October, comprising of people with disabilities.
    Carrie Varner and Torgerson Properties of Fairmont also won awards for employing people with disabilities.
    A huge victory was won regarding the voter restriction amendment, which was defeated, thus allowing Minnesota voters with disabilities to vote.
    Thousands fo Minnesotans with disabilities still wait for efforts to help them live independently. This will be an ARC public policy to reduce waiting lists in 2013.
    One in 88 Americans has autism effective disorder (ASD). The ARC will be working on helping those with ASD to receive services early in life that help them thrive, necessary health care and behavioral services and supports to help adults live more independently and find jobs.
