Every team has games where they take the shots and they just don’t drop in. The girls basketball team had one of those games against the Rockford Rockets in the opening round of the SJA Holiday Tournament.
Especially in the first half the Saints took shot after shot and they did not drop in. Where the girls were throwing the balls up from the outside, mid range or down low the ball just did not drop. Many of the shots were uncontested, but it was just a bad shooting night.
Rockford also applied a full court press on the Saints and that gave the young ball handlers of SJA problems.
At the half the Saints trailed 42-9 and the Rockets won the game 57-32.
The girls Head Coach Adam Schroeder said, “We were a little flat at the beginning of the first game then played better the second half. Rockford ended up winning the Tourney so they are obviously a pretty good team.”
Rockford went on a 13-0 run to finish out the half.
The poor shooting affliction that bother the Saints in the first half struck the Rockford girls in the second half.
With their starters still on the floor, the Rockets couldn’t score for the first seven and a half minutes of the second half. SJA actually outscored Rockford in the second half  23-15.
For the game the Saints took 70 shots, but only made 14, which works out to a 20 percent shooting performance.
Emily Hurley had eight points to lead the Saints in scoring. She was also the top rebounder with 11.

The opening round loss to Rockford meant the Saints played the Worthington Trojans for third place.
SJA started out well and equalled their nine point first half effort in game one in the first two and a half minutes of the game against the Trojans.
The Saints led 9-4 at that point, and held a 13-9 lead with just under 10 minutes to play in the half.
Worthington went on a 20-2 run to close out the half.
The Saints had a tough time getting it going in the second period and trailed 40-19 with just under 12 minutes to play in the half.
Julia Beckius led the Saints with 16 points. She was 2-3 from behind the arc and had the only three pointers for the Saints in the game.  Aryn Eckstrom was the other Saint in double figures as she had 12 points.
Page 2 of 2 -     Devon Flohrs had 14 rebounds and Emily Bottem had 11 rebounds.
A young team is going to get better by playing against tough competition.
Coach Schroeder said, “I was very pleased with how the girls came out and played against a very talented Worthington team. We continue to show improvement so that's definitely a positive sign.”
