  • Harold Donald (Don) Zumwalt, 80, of St. James, died Thursday, Jan. 10, 2013, at St. James Medical Center, St. James. Don’s directive was that his physical body be donated to the University of Minnesota Medical School to support medical research and education for health professionals. Interment will be at Lakewood Cemetery, Minneapolis, at a future date. The family requests that donations be made to the U of M Anatomy Bequest Program or St. James Hospital’s Hospice Program.
    Don was born Jan. 27, 1932, in Mapleton, to Harold W. Zumwalt and Edith (Wendt) Zumwalt, and graduated from Garden City High School. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1950 and served in the Korean War with the 19th Infantry Regiment, 82nd Ordnance Ammunition Battalion, Company G. He was twice awarded the Purple Heart for wounds received during enemy engagement and was honorably discharged in 1953. On June 3, 1957, he was united in marriage to Patricia (O’Herin) Ward in Mankato. Don was a lineman with Excel Energy in Mankato and St. James until his retirement in 1991.
    Don is survived by his wife, Patricia of St. James; daughter, June (Jeff) Thompson of Bertram, Tex.; sons, Merle Zumwalt of Mankato, David Zumwalt of St. James and Robert Zumwalt of St. James; Brenda Zumwalt of Mankato; and Anna and Tom Brick of Owatonna; grandchildren, John Thompson, Allison (Thompson) Watson, Matt Zumwalt, Laura Zumwalt, Erin (Zumwalt) Lyon, Lacy Brick, Daniel Zumwalt, Jamie (Brick) Nelson, Jason Zumwalt and Mary Pat Zumwalt; brothers, Richard Zumwalt of Winnebago, Thomas Zumwalt of Winnebago and Gene (Mary Jo) Zumwalt of Columbia Heights; sisters, Mary Lou Keltgen of Mankato, Donna Scholtz of Kasota, Judith (Darrell) Lange of Winnebago, Sandra (Dean) Flemming of Sawyer, N.D. and Pamela (Robert) Moore of Kenner, La.
    Don was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Dale; sister, Shirley Zumwalt; and brothers, Jerold Zumwalt and Dean Zumwalt.
