  • Fifteen members of the Tuesday Study Club were present at the Jan. 15 meeting at the home of Carol Paulson.
Carol Paulson’s short program was about One Community One Book, a program sponsored by the Watonwan County Library.
Michael Perry has written Population 485, Meeting Your Neighbors One Siren at a Time, which tells about his experiences as an EMT in his small hometown of New Auburn, Wisconsin. The book is one of 20 books chosen each year as “worldwide books.”
Our community is encouraged to read the book and then join in several special events planned to discuss it.  The library has a number of copies, and the book is also for sale at the Country Collage.
Jean Bruton introduced Beni and Marie Rete, who came to the United States from Romania in 2002. Beni told about how God had been with him through many hardships in his life.
Communism was brought into Romania by the Russians after World War II.
Growing up as a Christian in Communist Romania was very difficult for his entire family.  His parents were never promoted from their low-level jobs, and Beni and his siblings were bullied at school.
Beni served in the Communist army and also spent some time in prison because of his beliefs.  Marie grew up in Altura, Minnesota, and went over to Hungary to teach English. Beni and Marie eventually met, were married in Romania in 2001 and came to Minnesota in 2002.
Beni now works in the radiology department at St. James Medical Center, and Marie is kept busy with their four young children.
Beni concluded his talk with a beautiful rendition of “When Peace Like a River.”
The next meeting will be Feb. 19 at the home of Vicki Eatwell.  Marge Johnson is in charge of the program.
