What has become a great tradition in St. James, Coaches vs. Cancer had it’s 2013 ceremony on Jan. 24, when a check for $7,775.61 cents was presented in the Coaches vs. Cancer fundraising campaign before the SJA game with New Ulm.
Last year St. James schools were the top fundraising schools in the state of Minnesota. This check is a strong indication that the Saints will have a good shot at retaining the title.
SJA Head Basketball Coach Steve Walker thanked all students, and staff for the efforts they put in making this event a great success. He considered the results incredible.
Attending the ceremony when Coach Walker unveiled the check, were Jamie Nelson, who is a Coaches vs Cancer Representative; Mary Cassem of the American Cancer Society; and Ellie Kulseth the representative for Watonwan County Relay for Life.
Members of the SJA boys basketball team were on the floor with Walker. Seniors Joe Nelson and Sam Carlson were holding the check.
The top class for fundraising was Mrs. Susan Carlson’s Northside fifth grade class. The class was the winner of the pink basketball and the kids get to keep it in their classroom for the next year.
As has been a tradition, Coach Walker had people in the gym who had cancer stand up. Many people stood. Then he asked people to stand if they had a family member or had acquaintance who had cancer. Nearly everyone in the gym stood. “This is why we have this fundraiser,” Coach Walker said.
St. James has a history of being one of the top fundraising schools in the state. In addition to winning the fundraising title, the St. James fund raising effort placed as high as second in the state. Three years ago, St. James placed fifth having raised $6046.
