  • It’s hard to imagine, but winter sports are starting to wind down. The wrestlers had their last home meet two weeks ago, and last week the Saints gymnastics team had it’s last home meet.
The last home meet was also parents night and the gymnasts and team fans gave thanks to the moms and dads who support their young athletes.
It was the last home meet for seniors Kaitlyn Jence and Erin Hurley. In the two years I’ve covered the sport, Erin has been the team’s best gymnast by virtue of being the team’s top scorer for both of the last two years.
On Friday, the Saints hosted Luverne and St. Peter in the triangular meet.
Hurely placed third in the all around with a score of 31.575. Rebekah Berry of St. Peter won the all around with a 33.500 score. Samantha Pierce just edged out Erin with a score of 31.800.
Erin was second in the floor with a score of 8.450. She was third in the vault with a score of 8.650.
The Saints Glenda Hector scored well in the vault with an 8.275 and she had an all  around score of 25.575. After the two seniors, Glenda, who is a sophomore, is the team’s oldest gymnasts.
The rest of the Saints competing in the varsity meet were freshmen or in even younger grades.
Luverne won the meet with a team score of 128.650. St. Peter was second in 122.975. The Saints came in third with 103.725.
The Saints began the year scoring in the low 90s, so there has been improvement as the year has moved along and  as many of the team’s youngest gymnasts have improved.
Up next for the Saints is the SCC Tournament. It’s going to be held at Martin County West Wellcome Elementary School. The meet is scheduled to begin on  Friday at 6:30 pm.
