  • The first fundraiser of the year for the St. James Railroad Days celebration took place Feb. 3 at the American Legion in downtown St. James.
The staff of St. James Federal served the community eggs, ham and a fruit cocktail, while bids were received for pies and merchandise was sold, all to aid in financing the upcoming Railroad Days celebration.
Pies were donated by local businesses and residents including Hometown, Dairy Queen, Paul’s Food Pride, Subway, Schmidtz Bakery, Super Fair, Encore, Miss St. James and other private donations.
The Railroad Days Committee will be announcing the 2013 Railroad Days grand marshals within the next two weeks. Grand marshals are selected for their contributions to the St. James area and are honored at the Railroad Days celebration.
An early addition to the Railroad Days celebration will be a package deal for a VIP WE Fest giveaway in collaboration with seven Mankato country music radio stations and other country music radio stations in the area. The winner will be announced the Friday of Railroad Days and must be present at Friday Night Country  Night in St. James to win.
Also changing this year is the Miss St. James competition. Rather than the pageant-like contest which has taken place in the past, there will be an essay contest with a school scholarship available to any junior girl at St. James High School. The winner of the essay contest will be named Miss St. James and receive a college scholarship courtesy of the Railroad Days Committee.
The Railroad Days Committee has also begun selling raffle tickets for the Railroad Days Sunday afternoon drawing. Raffle tickets are just five dollars and upon purchase individuals will be eligible for up to $2,000  in a cash prize.
The next fundraiser will be the Beerfest beer tasting, though no date has been set for that event. Look for a date in future Plaindealer publications.
