The boys basketball Saints fell to the Saints of the North - St. Peter - 77-55 last Friday at St. Peter. SJA played an exciting, close game against powerhouse St. Peter when the other Saints visited the SJA gym earlier in the year. SJA finally lost the game in overtime.
St. Peter is a big, talented, highly ranked team, but once more the SJA Saints played St. Peter close early in the game. Head Coach Steve Walker said, “We got off to a good start. The boys did a good job on the boards limiting them to one shot and we also did a good job of not allowing them to go inside.
St. James led early in the game 24-19. Then St. Peter started forcing the ball inside to their very big front line. Their scoring picked up with some in the paint baskets and the St. Peter players started getting to the foul line.
It was close at the half as SJA trailed 37-30.
Coach Walker said the game went back and forth for the first ten minutes of the second half. “Ryan Menssen had a great run of 10 straight points for us and we trailed 50-42. But they went on an 8-0 run and we were never able to get closer than that. I thought our kids played with great energy against the fourth rated team in the state on the road,” Coach Walker said.
Zach Brandts led the Saints with 18 points. Two other Saints were in double figures, as Menssen had 14 and Walker Froehling had 13. Froehling had a good all around game, as he got three of the Saints four blocks, led the team in assists with five and made it a double double when he got 13 rebounds.
The boys had a subpar shooting night, as SJA hit just 28 percent of their shots. SJA took 71 shots and St. Peter took 70 field goal attempts, but St. Peter hit 44 percent from the floor and that was the big difference in the game.
SJA had a game scheduled against Cedar Mountain/Comfrey on Monday, but the game was postponed due to the high winds and wind chill warning that raked the region that night.
The game has been rescheduled to be played Thursday night at Cedar Mountain/Comfrey.
The last regular season game of the year is a home game. It’s against GHEC-Truman and will be played on Monday, Feb. 25 with the tip off set for 7:30 pm.
