The Saints girls basketball team was blown away Monday night - by the wind - not on the court.
The high wind warning and wind chill advisory caused the cancellation of the girls basketball game against Cedar Mountain/Comfrey on Monday night. The game was first postponed, but then it was canceled.
The end of the regular season snuck up on the SJA girls basketball team this year.
The Fairmont game last Thursday, was suppose to be the team’s second to the last game of the season, but it turned out to be the last regular season game for the four seniors Michaela Nordby, Devon Flohrs, Emily Hurley, Aryn Eckstrom and their teammates.
Fairmont 61, SJA 42
The score does not reveal the positive that happened in this game. It was the girls best shooting night of the year, as the Saints it hit 54 percent from the floor. The only problem was the Saints got off just 26 shots during the game.
Coach Adam Schroeder said, “It was by far the best shooting night we've had all year. The worse part is that we only shot 26 times.
“Julia Beckius started out the night with 11 points right off the bat. They struggled guarding her off the dribble.
“Fairmont’s size with the two players Lardy and Christiansen just proved to be too much for us.”
The Fairmont front line size shows up in the SJA rebounding stats. “We had by far our worse rebounding night of the year as well. It's hard to win with only 11 total rebounds in a game.” Schroeder said.
Fairmont secured the game in the first half as the Cardinals led 39-23 at the break.
As he did much of the year, Coach Schroeder substituted many players into the game, “I was very pleased with the effort I got from the B squad girls in the second half of the varsity game. They played aggressive on defense and hit the open shots on offense.
“Morgan Sandmeyer came in and hit a three right away then had another bucket off a screen in our offensive set.”
Beckius was the only Saint in double figures as she had 13 points. She also led the team in steals with three.
The three seniors of Eckstrom, Flohrs and Hurley each had three rebounds.
With the regular season ended by old man winter the girls begin State Tournament play on the road as the eight seed against the top seeded Worthington Trojans.
