What separates the St. James Polar Plunge from other plunges in the state of Minnesota is participants can raise money for any charity they choose. Here are the individual charities and money raised:
St. James Area Foundation - $1,490
    District 840 Foundation - $500
    Relay for Life - $735
    American Heart Association - $2,139
St. James Fire Department - $345
    Alzeimers - $305
    Make a Wish Foundation - $100
    Our Military Kids - $100
Watonwan County Humane Society - $200
    ALS - $140
The Polar Plunge is becoming very popular in Minnesota with people suffering through the long cabin-fevered winter. Cities cut a large hole in the ice and the community raises money for a special cause or causes before people jump into the ice-cold water.
This was the first year for the Freeze Your Caboose Polar Plunge, but the participation was outstanding. There was talk soon after the jump of creating teams and raising money for next year’s event.
Of the people I spoke to after the event, all said they would do it again. Most often it was described as cold, but not too bad. The brief dip in the lake is followed by a trip to a hot tub to warm up. And, nothing feels better than raising money for a worthy cause.
Photos and video of the event are on the Plaindealer website now at stjamesnews.com.
