  •     When a team has a difficult season as far as the won-loss record goes, that team is going to be the bottom seed come tournament time.
That was the case with the SJA girls basketball team, as they were eighth seeded and had to hit the road to play the top seeded Worthington Trojans on their home court Saturday night.
The results of that kind of a match up are not preordained, pretty close to being preordained, but upsets do happen.              Unfortunately for the Saints, they didn’t pull off an upset. The Saints fell 70-27 to a focused Worthington team.

One of the recurring problems for the girls this year has been some very poor shooting percentages.
Saturday night was no exception. From the floor the best shooting of the night happened from beyond the arc when the girls hit 5/20. The Saints were just 3 of 34 in their two point shot attempts - that’s 8.8 percent. The team overall shooting for the night was 8 of 54 for 16 percent.
As might be expected from these kind of numbers no Saints were in double figures. Hurley  had eight points, Eckstrom had seven and  Flohrs had six. Two other players rounded out the scoring with three each.
The Saints out rebounded Worthington 33-16, with SJA having 18 offensive rebounds alone, but the put back shots were not falling.
The Saints trailed 40-10 at the half.
Summarizing the game Head Coach Adam Schroeder said, “Worthington was a very good team and we really didn't match up well with them at all.
“We shot poorly from the field early in the game and couldn't quite come back from that. I was very pleased with the girls’ effort though.
“They very easily could have given up, but they fought very hard. Unfortunately it didn't turn out the way we had hoped. Our seniors led the way in scoring.”             Reflecting on the entire season the Head Coach said, “As far as how the season went, I thought for us being so young that overall the season went OK.
“Our seniors showed great leadership and our younger girls really improved throughout the year. Our leading scorer was a freshman (Julia Beckius) and the sophomores we have showed a lot of potential.

“The girls I had this year worked hard every day, had a great attitude, competed every day  and just wanted to get better.
I definitely learned a lot from them this year and I'm excited to get going again next year. I'm also sure the girls learned a lot from us as well.”
