  • Heritage month is a time for people to celebrate the culture from which they came. To celebrate heritage month, The Sertoma Club held an essay and poster contest. The poster winners were chosen for their artistic strength and the best portrayal of heritage. The essay theme was how to make the community a better place.

    “A Better St. James”
St. James is an awesome city! But... it could be better.
One way St. James could be better is if we could organize a group of kids, called “Caring Kids.” The group would go around town and visit with elderly people. They could visit with them, and play games with them. It would make our city a better place by giving kids a chance to meet new people and not have  kids roaming around town getting into trouble.
Another way we can make our city better is with a youth center. It could offer a place for kids to get help with their homework after school, which would help them to get better grades and keep them off the streets, which would help make better citizens for our city.
A final way to make our city better is by fixing our streets. It would be easier and safer to drive on not only for cars and trucks, but also bikes, skateboards and roller blades.
That’s my opinion on how to make our city a better place. If we all work together, we can change our city to even a better place to live.
