The Butterfield-Odin School Board met Monday, March 18, and signed a health and safety agreement with Harbo Consulting Agency. The school will pay HCA $29,700 during the next three school years in exchange for HCA’s services.
The contract with HCA is effective July 1, 2013. HCA will coordinate, develop and monitor environmental health and safety projects, conduct annual and semi-annual inspections, keep the district current on health and safety issues and address all environmental issues at the request of the superintendent. This will ensure that the school is up to code in all health and safety issues.
Board members discussed the school sports pairing briefly, specifically about the SCC conference change for football. The SCC denied the Saint’s request to leave the conference just for football. It is unclear what the next step will be for Saint’s athletics.
Superintendent Lisa Shellum updated the board members about renovations taking place in the school. She told the board there were a few little issues with additions and change orders, but she is working to resolve those issues.
The school developed a plan to pull out the old piping, which could be more than 100 years old, and get new fixtures for the bathrooms. With any old building there will be things that need to be fixed, but the board is working to keep everything functioning smoothly.
“We continue to be proactive,” said Shellum. “Our building has been remodelled but we still have these little things we need to work on.”
The kids at Butterfield-Odin are hoping to put together a talent show which will feature magicians, musicians, comedians and dancers. Shellum told the board there are many talented individuals in the school that the public probably doesn’t know about, so she thinks it would be a fun afternoon.
In the meantime, the kids at Butterfield-Odin are working on their school play “You Can’t Take it With You” which has been casted and begun practicing in the school gym. That play will be April 19 and 20 at 7:30 p.m.
Butterfield-Odin School continues to work with St. James High School in creating a school calendar that features events from both schools.
The Butterfield-Odin School Board wanted to thank Steve Ringen and students for the America’s Farmers Grow Communities Monsanto Grant which will be presented March 27, at 1 p.m.
The students of Butterfield-Odin raised $700, and with contributions from the public, the school will be able to purchase another 10 iPads, which have already been ordered.
