  •     The Saints girls basketball team held it’s banquet celebrating the 2012-2013 season. It was the first season for Head Coach Adam Schroeder and while it was difficult from a won-loss perspective, the Head Coach said that a season’s wins don’t tell you anything about the character of the players or how much they improved during the year.
It was a young team this season that will have zero seniors next year.  Coach Schroeder said that the experience they gained this year means they will get better next year.
Banquets, however, are about celebrating what the last season was about.
That starts with the awards the seniors collected. Center Emily Hurley was voted the team’s MVP and won first team all South Central Conference honors. Emily also won the team’s Miss Windex (rebounding) award. She had 218 rebounds for the year.
Emily led the team with a 9.5 rebounds per  game average. She had 21 rebounds in the first game the Saints played against New Ulm. That total is the second highest single game total in Saints history.
Lynell Anderson had 26 in a game in 1990. Julia Runge is in third place with a 20 rebound effort in a game last year.
The Best Teammate award went to senior Aryn Eckstrom. Aryn finished her basketball career in fourth place on the Saints free throw percentage list. She made 72 percent of her free throws.
The Miss Defense award went to senior Devon Flohrs. Coach Schroeder also praised the defensive efforts of Michaela Nordby.
The rest of the awards went to underclassmen Freshman Julia Beckius won the Miss Offense award. She was the team leader in scoring with 250 points. Julia was also named Miss Basketball. She also was given a Honorable Mention award on the SCC All Conference team.
The Sixth Woman award went to Brenda Cervantes. The Most Improved player award went to Emily Bottem. Emily was also voted a captain for next year.
As a team, the Saints set a record for averaging the fewest number of fouls in a game with 14.70 a game being the benchmark.
The 338 fouls for the year was also the fewest by a Saints team.      Where the team will need to improve next year is in preventing turnovers and shooting percentage. Those numbers were some of the worst in the Saints history.
