  • Ten members of the Tuesday Study Club were present for the March19 meeting at the home of Marge Moulton.
Marge Moulton told about a publication available at the library, Book Page, which gives information about new books. She told about several books which she had enjoyed reading after learning about them in Book Page.
Anne Sorensen presented the program for the day. She told about the trip which she and her husband took to Russia from March 17 to April 7, 2012. They flew from the United States to Amsterdam and then to St. Petersburg, Russia. There they boarded a German riverboat, converted to a cruise ship, together with 200 other passengers and 96 crew members.
The cruise took them 829 miles through three lakes, two rivers, and the Moscow Canal. This waterway was made possible with the building of 17 locks. 100,000 people died during the construction of the locks in the 1940s. Anne told about the many sights of St. Petersburg, where they spent five days. Some of these were St. Isaac’s Cathedral; Peterhof, the summer home of Peter the Great; and Yusupov Palace. Many of the buildings had been badly damaged during World War II and had been restored.
Their cruise ended at Moscow, where they spent five days and saw Red Square, the Kremlin, the Jewish Heritage Museum, the Russian Circus, and many other interesting sights. In addition to their cruise, the Sorensens also spent four days in Kiev. St. Sophia’s Cathedral, built in 1037, the Chernobyl Museum, and the many beautiful gardens were highlights of Kiev. Anne also showed beautiful amber jewelry, intricate weaving, birch bark art, and Matrioshka dolls, examples of the artistic ability of the Russian people.
The next meeting will be on April 16 at the home of Linda Beam. Sandi Olson will present the program.
