  • A new record was set at the ‘Cash for Kids’ fundraising event held this past weekend at the St. James High School Gym.
According to Pam Runge of the District 840 Foundation, the auction raised $32,000, which is the most in the 11 years the event has been held.  The previous top fundraising effort was $28,500.
“People that came to Cash for Kids were ready to help us out,” Pam said. She said she was extremley happy with the way the auction turned out.
The largest amount received for something  auctioned off wasn’t an item, but the naming rights to the high school gym.
The high school gym will be known as the Denny Kaus Gymnasium for the next year in honor of the long time St. James Saints supporter and fan who passed away in early March.
The community pledged $2,200 during the auction. That amount was matched by Darrel and Leora Ask, who made a personal gift for the same amount making the total amount raised for the gym naming rights to $4,400. Leora Ask said, “My heart said I had to do this.”
Another big acution item was for a week’s vacation at Lutsen. That went for $1,575 according to Runge. She said that all parts of the auction went well. That includes $12,835 for the adult auction as well as strong dollar amounts raised during the live child items, the silent and the silent certificate parts of the fundraising event.
The money that was raised will be turned over to the St. James School District to purchase items for St. James student’s education that are not in the school district’s budget.
