The Butterfield-Odin school board discussed the 2013-2014 calendar at their regularly scheduled Monday, April 15 meeting.
The school is required to have 1,020 hours of classroom time for children. Butterfield-Odin School currently has a calendar schedule of 1,027 hours.
Their class days will begin at 8:20 a.m. and end at 3:10 p.m. except some Mondays throughout the year. This will align them with similar policies in St. James.
Some school board members raised questions regarding the Mondays off in February and March, saying “it’s hard as a parent to find someone to watch your kids,” and “my concern is with the children – that they are getting their proper education with missing class.”
The policy suggested will save the district money and has four less contract days than St. James.
The board recognized that it was just a first reading of the calendar and there could be some changes to the final edition.
The Butterfield-Odin School Board accepted the resignation of daycare assistant Stacy Schulze. The resignation was made verbally, but leaves a space open in the daycare center at Butterfield-Odin School.
It was suggested that the board fill the position with a part-time long term substitute. The Butterfield-Odin School Board agreed and will be advertising for the position.
The Butterfield-Odin schools will be changing their internet provider from Verizon to Mediacom. With the switch the school will be saving thousands of dollars.
Their current rate is $700 per 1 mg bandwidth. With the new contract, the school will now receive ten mg bandwidth for just $611 per month.
Superintendent Lisa Shellum said she was excited for the change and looking forward to the faster speeds and smaller bills.
The PSEO district guidelines were also discussed and changed slightly to require students to pay tuition fees if they drop a PSEO class later than two weeks after the class has begun.
The school is not reimbursed for the class if the student drops past that point.
Students who have taken PSEO classes from Butterfield-Odin schools have reported doing very well in their classes.
Junior and Senior Prom will be held Friday, May 10 and will also be a half day.
The School Play “You Can’t Take It With You” is scheduled for April 26 and 27 at 7 p.m.
Third Trimester Parent Teacher Conferences are scheduled for Thursday, April 18, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.
Staffing recommendations will be brought to the May Butterfield-Odin School Board meeting.
Superintendent Lisa Shellum and staff representative Wendi Anderson were named by the School Board as L.E.A Representatives of Buttefield-Odin Schools unanimously.
Butterfield-Odin accepted membership into the Minnesota State High School League.
