The St. James High School Athletic Hall of Fame Association by-laws were approved by the St. James School Board last week.
The purpose of the newly formed Hall of Fame is to give special recognition to people who’ve made contributions to the Saints athletic programs.
St. James high school teacher and baseball head coach Jon Wilson explained the structure of the Hall of Fame and how a person who was a player for the Saints will be selected for the Hall of Fame.
Athletes selected to the Hall of Fame must have graduated from St. James High School at least 15 years before admission to the Hall of Fame. The candidates must have shown mature accomplishments since graduation.
Other criteria to be considered will include athletic accomplishments like:
Having played on a conference or a Minnesota State High School League (district, section and region) championship team.
Played in a state tournament.
Earned a letter in more than one sport or lettered at least twice in a sport.
Named to an All-Conference, All-state, or All-Star team.
Received a news media recognition award.
Received team awards from annual programs such as being named MVP or the team captain.
Coaches, both head or assistant can be considered for the Hall of Fame.
The criteria for selection include:
A candidate must have coached a minimum of ten years in St. James.
Other criteria include being a coach who coached a team that won a conference championship.
Coached a team in regional and sectional competition.
Coached a team or individual in state meet competition.
Had a minimum 68 percent won/lost record.
Earned a state and or national award.
Assisted in a program that reached three of the listed criteria.
The current committee members are Wilson who is the chairperson, Jim Neid, Don Kurpiers, Jim Brass, Marcia Eggen, Dennis Johnson, Dale Eckstrom, Bill Mohr and Bruce Aamot.
The committee is thinking there will be around ten charter members to the Hall of Fame. The people selected as charter members will likely be announced at the St. James All-School Reunion in June.
The induction of the first class will be during Homecoming weekend on Sept. 28, 2013. A banquet is planned to be held at the VFW.
