No Saints sports team played a scheduled game, meet, or match last week.
That’s what happens when two snow storms blanket the playing fields the third week of April. It wasn’t just snow as there were chilling rains and just plain cold weather.
From Thursday through Tuesday a total of 23 team events were canceled. The tennis team had a match canceled on Thursday, rescheduled the match for Tuesday and had it canceled again.
Some of the numbers in this count of 23 were tournaments where the tennis team and the softball team were scheduled to play several opponents in one day.
It’s not just tennis that’s canceled matches that had already been rescheduled. Both the softball and baseball teams have canceled games with Fairmont twice.
The baseball team has not played a game this year. The Saints have canceled nine scheduled or rescheduled games.
The softball team has played one home game and with a canceled tourney and rescheduled games included has canceled nine games.
The boys and girls golf teams have not played a match home or away. The St. James course isn’t open yet.
Tennis and track had the benefit of at least kicking off the season with some indoor events, but it’s been tough sledding outside.
The tennis team got a home match in, but that’s probably because Tennis Coach Les Zellmann ran a snowblower over the courts after one of the snow storms.
The track team got a home invitational in after a couple of indoor events, but the boys and girls teams haven’t competed in an event since that cold home meet on April 5.
The weather is predicted to really warm up this weekend. Perhaps the spring sports can finally begin. The athletes have had enough indoor practice.
