  • Butterfield-Odin School students put on a production of “You Can’t Take it With You” Friday, April 26 and Saturday, April 27.
The three act play is a comedy about two dysfunctional families and the relationship between one family’s Tony Kirby (played by Ross Blomgren) and the other family’s Alice Sycamore (played by Elida Zaldivar).
The Sycamore family is a happy-go-lucky group who are quick to invite people into their home and are unashamed of their quirky behavior. A stark contrast to the Sycamore family, the Kirby crew is unhappy and stuck-up.
When the Kirby’s dine with the Sycamore family to celebrate the relationship of their children, the house is rampaged by federal agents who believe the Sycamores are up to no good. Their suspicion is enhanced when they find barrels of gunpowder in the basement of the Sycamore home.
Eventually the two families get to know and accept one another, but not before Alice decides to leave the Sycamore home indefinitely.
Students of Butterfield-Odin have been practicing for these performances for about two months and after a rocky first couple of shows were able to put together a wonderful closing performance.
Superintendent of Butterfield-Odin Schools and Director Lisa Shellum explained before the show how the process of putting on a play has been a learning experience for the students and herself. The school is looking forward to putting together more plays in the future.
The production was a fundraiser for the senior class, with chicken sandwiches, chips, ice cream, bars and beverages being sold during intermission.
