Well, Minnesota teased us with some nice weather before coming back with more snow this May. My first draft of this column praised Minnesota summer and reflected on the wonderful feeling of fresh air we got after months stuck inside. But, alas, Mother Nature had other plans.
In Minnesota we are used to weather like this. Late snow storms after 80 degree days are pretty normal in a Minnesota “spring.” I liken our weather outlook to Aldous Huxley’s “Brave New World.”
In that novel all of the citizens live a happy life, aided by pills that leave everyone in a permanent high. Ironically, since everyone is happy, no one is happy at all. Among other things, “Brave New World” teaches its readers that you have to experience those rotten times in order to really appreciate the good times.
While it is snowing in Minnesota this May, when those 80 degree days come back we will be ever appreciative of our good fortune. We can appreciate nice weather better than anyone else in the United States because we are teased by summer all throughout our spring.
