  • Saints 10, Mt. Lake 4

The wind chill was in the 20s on Friday night, but the Saints generated enough heat to club the visiting Mt. Lake Wolverines 10-4.
The Saints got one in the bottom of the first and then scored four in the third to take a 5-0 lead before the visitors could get going. The Saints got on the board when the ML shortstop miss played a pop up by Walker Froehling and hustled all the way to second on the error.
A single by Sam Carlson got runners on the corners and with two outs right handed batter  Kyle Pinke sliced a liner down the right field line to drive in two runs. The clutch hitting continued with another two runs  crossing the plate on  David Bradley’s two out hit.
Froehling started the game for the Saints and was dominant. He went four innings and struck out eight. In picking up the win, he gave up three hits and one earned run during his stint on the mound.
Dylan Wolle tossed one inning and gave up one run while striking out one. Derrick Shupe pitched the other two innings striking out four. So the Saints had 13 strike outs in seven innings. Shupe gave up two earned runs and five hits.
The Saints had eight hits, but no player had more than one. Pinke and Bradley each had two RBIs. Carlson scored two runs.

    LCWM 9, SJA 1

The Saints traveled to Lake Crystal on Monday to take on LCWM and lost 9-1. The Knights are the 20th ranked team in class A high school baseball.

The Saints out hit the Knights 7-6, but couldn’t translate that to more Saints runs and less Knights runs.
The Saints committed four errors. Kyle Pinke went four innings and gave up nine runs, six of them earned. He only gave up five hits and struck out five, but the bane of his effort was the five walks he gave up. That put a lot of Knights on the base paths. Justin Stevens and Derrick Shupe each tossed an inning.
Zack Gleiter was 2-3 with a run scored and Walker Froehling was 1-3 and had the team’s only RBI.

    Doubleheader
    Fairmont 2, SJA 1
    Saints 4, Fairmont 0
The Saints almost swept a pair from one of their biggest nemesis, the Fairmont Cardinals, but Fairmont  scored the winning run in bottom of 7th inning with two outs to win game one.
Page 2 of 3 -     The Saints big horse Sam Carlson threw 6 2/3rds innings and took the loss. He struck out seven and gave up no earned runs.
A series of miscues cost the Saints a chance for the win. Fairmont’s Bryce Holm led off the inning trying to bunt for a hit and reached on a throwing error. He then moved to second when Christian Petschke hit a ground ball and the throw was mishandled at second base leaving runners on first and second.
Holm was thrown out at third attempting to steal giving St. James two outs in the inning.
The Cardinals Jake Ellis struck out but reached first base on an error leaving runners at first and third base.  Carlson intentionally walked a batter to load the bases. Luke Becker then drove one into centerfield scoring the winning run.
The Saints committed five errors but had just four hits. Walker Froehling got the Saints only hit.
In game two, three Saints pitchers blanked Fairmont as the Saints won 4-0.
SJA scored first in the fourth inning - Carlson  reached first base on an error and was sacrificed over by Kyle Pinke.  David Bradley walked and John Olsen singled to load the bases. Tyler Witcraft singled to score a run and Justin Stevens walked to score a run.
In the fifth inning the Saints scored another run with two outs.  Carlson singled and was replaced by Tyler Kueker (pinch runner) - Kueker was stealing as Kyle Pinke hit the ball toward second base in the hole. The second baseman threw the ball away as Kueker continued to hustle around the bases to score all the way from first base.
In the sixth inning, Bradley led off with a walk,  was sacrificed over by Olsen as the pitcher tried to throw to second to get the lead runner  both were safe. The next two Saints batters were retired and then  Zack Gleiter was walked to load the bases.  Walker Froehling was hit by a pitch to score Bradley from third giving St. James a 4-0 lead into the 7th inning.
Froehling started and went five innings. Jacob Ziemer went an inning and dodged some jams giving up two hits and hitting two batters, but no runs were scored against the Saints. Carlson closed out the game and got the save.
In the top of the seventh inning, Jay Ruen reached on an error and Brandon Brooks was hit by pitch.  Sam Carlson entered the game to retire the top of Fairmont's order.  He was able to get Fairmont's top 3 hitters to pop up and fly out to end the game.
Page 3 of 3 -     The Saints are now 4-4 for the year and 2-3 in the conference. The team plays St. Peter in a home doubleheader on Thursday night.
