The SJA boys tennis team hosted the Blue Earth Area Buccaneers on Tuesday night and won with a dominant performance by sweeping all seven matches in straight sets.
Weather wise, it was a perfect night for tennis, and the Saints spread their wings and dominated their South Central opponent.
Only the number one doubles team of Will Runge and Aldair Trujillo had a close match. They won 7-6, 7-6. Every other doubles teams and all of the singles players had an easier time of it.
Connor Olson won at number one singles 6-3, 6-3. Sophomore John Foss won at two singles 6-1, 6-0.
A pair of seniors won at three and four singles. Brock Mueller won at number three 6-1, 6-2 and Kilian Wehde won at four singles 6-3, 6-2.
On the doubles side of the ledger, the number two doubles team of Connor Engel and Cole Skow won 6-4, 6-3. The three doubles team of Erik Heitz and Sandin Skow had the most decisive win blanking their Bucs opponents 6-0, 6-0.
Saints Head Coach Les Zellmann said, “The depth of our team was very apparent against BEA. We hope to continue to make improvement strides now that the weather seems to be becoming more normal.”
On Saturday, the Saints host a four team tournament that includes Mound-Westonka. Coach Zellmann said, “We play Mound Westonka in our tournament on Saturday and they are currently ranked 4th in Class A tennis. They also have two individuals ranked in the top ten players in the state. We look forward to the challenge of good competition.”
Action gets under way on the St. James High School tennis courts at 9 am.
