  • With all the focus on anti-bullying, Butterfield-Odin Elementary chose to focus on children influencing their peers more positively and created the Ambassadors of Peace Team.
The Ambassadors are made up of seven students from grades five and six who come together once a week to focus on promoting positive attitudes in the school.
They have a wall in the Elementary area devoted to posters they have made spreading ideas of how we can all promote caring and kindness towards each other.
Recently, they went to each of the classrooms in the Elementary during a Character Education class and sang a Rap song about Respect.
Each month teachers in K-6 nominate a student from their classroom as Peacemaker of the Month. The Ambassadors then vote on which student will be awarded with the Peacemaker of the Month Award. The Ambassadors present that student with a certificate and a reward.  Pictures of the Peacemakers are also included on the Ambassador’s wall.
The Ambassadors have chosen to expand their activities and have formed a Kindness Club with the second grade.
Once a month the Ambassadors go into the second grade classrooms to work with the students on making cards for people in the community that have had sad things happen – an illness, an accident or a loss of  family member.
Next year, when the current sixth graders move to the seventh grade, new Ambassadors will be appointed to fill the voided positions. The 2012-2013 school year was the first year the Ambassadors of Peace Team has been in place at Butterfield-Odin.
