  • What a spring for sports. The Saints teams have played under some miserable conditions. It was not too many days ago the golf team seemed as if they were dodging snow drifts and bitter wind chills. Yesterday it was high winds and furnace like temperatures when the girls hosted New Ulm.
Head Coach Mark Beltz said, “Another day, another extreme weather condition to play in.”
Julia Boeve shot the low round for the Saints with a 54. The Coach said, “Julia played very steady golf and did a nice job of keeping the ball low and out of the wind. Jovanna Boeve also played well considering the conditions.”
Jovanna Boeve shot a 57. Lyndsey Haler shot a 56 and Lil Krause shot a 67. That resulted in the Saints totalling a team score of 234. New Ulm just edged SJA out by shooting a 231. Beltz said, “It was a close match that could have gone either way.”
The boys played New Ulm a day earlier when they played at Fairmont. The boys lost to the Eagles  as SJA shot 212 and New Ulm shot 160.
Mason Collier shot a 51, John Olsen shot a 52, Tyler Witcraft shot a 54 and Mitch Rettke shot a 55.
Against the Fairmont Cardinals, the boys shot another 212. The order of finish was the same. Collier was low, then Olsen, Witcraft and  Rettke.
The girls team just played Fairmont and they fell to the Cardinals by a 191 to 219 score.             Lyndsey Haler and Bethany Carlson tied with the low score of 52. Julia Boeve shot a 57 and Sophie Lepp shot a 58.
The girl golfers beat Madelia by shooting a team score of 218. Lyndsey Haler shot a 49, Bethany shot a 54, Julia shot a 56 and Lil shot a 59.
The boys played a good round of golf against Madelia, but lost 179 - 197. Collier was low with a 47, Rettke shot a 48, Witcraft scored a 50 and Clay Winrich had a 52.
Last Thursday, the two teams traveled to Waseca to take on the Blue Jays. The girls lost 207 - 240 and the boys fell when Waseca shot a 200 to their 237.
Once again, Lyndsey Haler was the lower scorer for the girls by shooting a 51, but no other girls broke 60. Sophie Lepp and Julia Boeve shot 62s and Bethany Carlson had a 65.
For the boys Mason Collier was once again the lower scorer when he carded a 50. Rettke was second with a 55, Ryan Witcraft had a 61 and Clay Winrich had a 65.
It’s been a busy couple of weeks as the golf teams have tried to cram as much playing time in a short period.
Page 2 of 2 -      Head Coach Beltz summed it up. “After playing seven meets in the last eleven days, we are looking forward to having some time to practice before the South Central Conference tournament on Monday.”
