  • The KEYC Golden Apple award is an annual award given to high school teachers who perform their work admirably in and out of the classroom.
One recipient of the KEYC Golden Apple was Mr. Dwight Lahti, a high school math teacher from Butterfield-Odin. He was nominated by fellow teacher Mr. Dennis Stade.
Lahti was nominated for his work preparing the students at Butterfield-Odin for life after high school. Lahti is also a brigade fire support officer in the military who has been deployed to Iraq twice.
“I think a lot of life lessons I learned in the miliraty come into the calssroom,” said Lahti in an interview with KEYC. “If I can teach math everyday that’s good, but I like to teach some value lessons to the kids.”
Math skills are key requirements for students looking to move on from high school to college. There has been a measurable difference in class math scores while Lahti has been teaching at Butterfield-Odin.
Lahti was honored in a presentation of the award two weeks ago at a school assembly.
