The St. James High School Music Department handed out the senior music awards for the class of 2013 last Wednesday during an assembly before school.
Music teachers Alison Kulseth and Karen Lahti praised this group of seniors, they said this was a very talented class and lamented a little bit on where they were going to find musicians and choir members to perform the way these students have.
The ceremony began with the awarding of the band, jazz unlimited and choir letter winners.
The choir awards started with the Outstanding Soloists. Students winning this award were Sam Carlson, Elliut Fonseca, Cassidy Chapek and Bethany Carlson.
The Outstanding Senior Awards are determined by the seniors. Winners of this award in choir were Fonseca, Chapek, Elida Ascencio, Aryn Eckstrom and Adam Bruton.
High Points for a senior in choir went to Cassidy Chapek. The Composition Award, not always given out, went to Adam Bruton. The Director's Award went to Taylor Engel.
The Schubert Award went to Elliut Fonseca. Mrs. Kulseth said Elliut's voice created a perfect sound.
The band awards began with Megan Lahti winning the Drum Major Award. The Outstanding Soloists were Lahti, Chapek, Fonseca, Taylor Engel, Bethany Carlson and Kilian Wehde.
The Outstanding Senior Awards, voted by the students, went to Chapek, Fonseca, Lahti and Brock Mueller.
Megan Lahti then won a string of awards. She first won the Senior High Points Award. She won the Louis Armstrong Award, which is a national award where one award is given out in every school. It is for outstanding achievement in jazz.
Then it was another national award, the John Phillip Sousa Award. As Band Director, and Mom, Karen read the accomplishments her daughter Megan had achieved over the years she was in band, she choked up and this caused Megan to tear up. Mother and daughter hugged as the teacher gave the student the Sousa Award for outstanding achievement in music.
The final award, the Department Award, had been given by the Rotary Club in an earlier assembly. It went to Cassidy Chapek.
More than thirty students were recognized at the awards ceremony. Several students from this talented class won multiple awards.
