At the awards ceremony at Butterfield Schools May 15, senior Derrick Krosch of Butterfield received a scholarship of $1,957 from the BHS class of 1957. Derrick will be attending Rasmussen College in Mankato in the fall.
For many years Charles Carlson, a 1957 graduate, nurtured a very strong desire to establish a scholarship fund for deserving Butterfield graduates.
Chuck shared his dream with his nineteen remaining classmates to determine their level of interest and support for a scholarship. Based on returned survey results an account was established with Bob Harder in the Odin State Bank to which classmates could privately contribute what ever they wished.
Current BHS seniors were invited to submit applications for the scholarship to their counselor, Tammi Samuelson. The BHS staff selected three finalists whose applications were sent to a three person panel of '57 grads who, working independently, ranked the applications and then returned them to Chuck. Chuck tallied the panel’s votes which determined the recipient of the award.
1957 graduate Loretta (Larson) Luckow attended and photographed the ceremony in which '57 grad Julian Grev presented the award to Derrick.
Helping Derrick was a very rewarding experience for the graduates of 1957 who hope to continue offering the scholarship in the future.
