Youth summer baseball got underway a little more than a week after the SJA Saints season ended.
I’m sure the players wouldn’t have minded playing high school ball a little longer, but it was time to move on and play Legion baseball.
St. James American Legion Post 33 had their first game Monday night and they lost to Blue Earth 4-2 on the road.
Manager Tim Pinke said, “We had only one hit until the seventh inning. We just didn’t hit the ball.”
Sam Carlson started for the Legion team, went 5 2/3rds innings and took the loss. Blue Earth got the first run of the game, but that wasn’t until the top of the fourth.
Carlson gave up three runs in the fifth, and was relieved by Jacob Ziemer. He threw one pitch to end the inning and blanked Blue Earth in the sixth.
St. James mounted a rally in their last at bat, but it wasn’t enough.
Tyler Kueker and David Bradley pinch hit for the Legion, both singled and both scored on a two out double by Walker Froehling.
Zack Gleiter walked before Froehling’s double, so St.James had runners on second and third with two outs when Ryan Menssen filed out to end the game.
The Legion ended up with four hits, with three of them being smacked in their last at bat. Kyle Pinke had a single in the second. Gleiter had three walks. Blue Earth had eight hits.
Carlson struck out two for St. James and Ziemer struck out two of the four batters he faced.
